At 62, I retired before Medicare.
Financially, I was ready to stop working. My mortgage was gone, my car was paid for, and I had retirement savings and a pension waiting for me.
But there was one problem I couldn’t ignore:
I was still three years away from Medicare.
My job was no longer about the paycheck. I was staying because of the insurance card in my wallet.
So instead of quitting blindly, I gave myself a test: 90 days in Cebu, Philippines.
I wanted to find out whether retiring abroad before Medicare could actually work — not as a vacation, but as a real life with healthcare planning, emergency savings, insurance decisions, family concerns, and a backup plan if something went wrong.
What I found in Cebu changed the way I thought about retirement.
This is not a story about escaping every risk.
It is about understanding which risks you can prepare for, which ones you cannot control, and whether fear should be allowed to decide when your life finally begins.
If you are considering early retirement, retiring in the Philippines, moving to Cebu, living abroad before Medicare, or building a retirement backup plan outside the United States, this story explores the questions that matter before making that decision.
