Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Assistant National Statistician Marizza B. Grande took the witness stand on Monday, September 7, as the House prosecution panel presented its latest witness in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Grande was called to testify on the PSA’s verification of the identities of individuals named as recipients in acknowledgment receipts used to account for confidential fund expenditures of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education (DepEd). A Quezon City court’s arrest warrant against Vice President Sara Duterte has no bearing on the ongoing impeachment proceedings against her, Senate President Win Gatchalian said Sunday. Gatchalian explained that the Quezon City Regional Trial Court and the Senate impeachment court operate under different proceedings, with the former determining criminal liability and the latter determining political accountability and fitness for public office. The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte would continue on Monday with a new witness to be presented by the House prosecution panel to answer questions on the “fictitious individuals” whom confidential funds were disbursed to. Escudero reminded both the prosecution and defence to observe the impeachment court’s sub judice rule, warning that violations could lead to sanctions.
