Strip away “supranational court” and those words may very well describe not the ICC, but the regime of US President Donald Trump in Washington that is now bent on “dismantling” the tribunal, despite America not even being a member of it.The prosecutors in the crimes against humanity case of former President Rodrigo Duterte have turned over to the defense nearly 7,000 pieces of evidence in the first seven months of the year, a substantial addition to the materials to be used once the trial begins at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in November.Based on the prosecution’s notification of the disclosure of evidence from January 7 to July 31, a total of 6,909 items of evidence were disclosed to Duterte’s legal team, the majority of which could be scrutinized by the defense.Of this number, 4,573 are categorized as “Rule 77 evidence,” which is tangible evidence that the defense could inspect; 2,279 are “incriminating,” and the remaining 57 are “potentially exonerating.”The latest White House assault against the court involves barring ICC president Tomoko Akane of Japan and trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye of Senegal from entering the US and carrying out transactions in the US financial system.
