The Supreme Court of the Philippines.Vice President Sara Duterte’s frequent foreign travels during her impeachment trial were ill-timed and could be seen as “disrespectful” to the Senate impeachment court, according to House prosecution counsel Lorna Kapunan.Kapunan said that while the public exchange between Duterte and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro over the Vice President’s trips abroad was “entertaining,” the timing of her travels raised questions given the seriousness of the impeachment case. The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte may be moved to the afternoon beginning next month to give senator-judges more time to hear the case without cutting into regular their legislative sessions. The prevailing sentiment among members of the Senate majority bloc was to hold legislative sessions in the morning and conduct the impeachment trial in the afternoon, with the tribunal’s proceedings possibly extending into late night. Sandro Marcos publicly blasted Sara Duterte after she made severe remarks against his family, including a threat to dig up his grandfather's body and comments regarding his father, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.Duterte earlier canceled a scheduled six-day trip to Japan, saying she had changed her plans, while criticizing the Office of the President for the supposed disclosure of her planned travels.Castro, however, maintained that there was nothing wrong with informing the public about the Vice President’s travel authority, saying the government had spent more than P7 million for Duterte’s security and staff during her foreign trips.Kapunan said Duterte’s claim that her travels were paid for using personal funds could also raise questions about the source of the money.
