President Marcos confirms that he will endorse a candidate to succeed him in the 2028 presidential elections. Marcos spoke before the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines presidential luncheon in Manila. However, the President stressed it is far too early to make a decision. He also confirmed that his party, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, will make alliances with other parties. He noted, however, that he has not yet held formal discussions with any prospective presidential contenders.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag denies rumors that Vice President Sara Duterte has been arrested. Rumors of Duterte’s arrest circulated alongside Matibag’s visit to Davao City. Matibag, however, quickly denied the reports. He maintained that the Vice President’s camp has pending court motions which law enforcement operatives have to respect.
The death toll from the combined effects of Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay and the southwest monsoon has risen to 21. That’s according to the NDRRMC. Benguet recorded the highest number of fatalities at 15, all due to landslides. The NDRRMC also reported that 17 people were injured and three others remain missing. The weather disturbances have affected more than 4 million people. These include residents in the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Calabarzon, Cordillera Administrative Region, National Capital Region, and Mimaropa.
Detained religious leader Apollo Quiboloy will not face capital punishment should he be convicted in the United States. This was the assurance made by the Justice Department. Chief State Counsel Dennis Arvin Chan stressed that protecting Quiboloy from the death penalty is a key consideration in the proceedings. There is still no decision on the U.S. extradition request. The DOJ is currently reviewing the extradition documents recently received from U.S. authorities. The United States is seeking Quiboloy’s extradition on serious charges, including conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking, sex trafficking of children, and bulk cash smuggling. Quiboloy has denied all accusations, maintaining that the cases against him are politically and religiously motivated.
