Former House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has been ordered detained at the New Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory in Payatas, but he has not physically left Cardinal Santos Medical Center, where he was arrested in his hospital room. WHAT HAPPENED • 7 September 2026 - The Office of the Ombudsman filed a P7.4 billion plunder charge against Romualdez over alleged flood control project kickbacks. He was served the arrest warrant hours later, in his room at Cardinal Santos Medical Center, where he was confined after a cardiovascular event. • 10 September 2026 - The Sandiganbayan Third Division issued a commitment order transferring custody of the Leyte representative to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology at the New Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory, Payatas. • The court has NOT yet ordered his physical transfer. He remains confined at Cardinal Santos. BJMP has taken charge of his custody and security there. • His motion for continued hospital confinement was heard on 10 September and continued on 11 September. The Office of the Ombudsman strongly opposed it. • Arraignment and pretrial are set for 14 September 2026, 8:30 a.m. WHO ELSE IS CHARGED The Ombudsman charged Romualdez alongside former Ako Bicol party-list congressman Zaldy Co, former personal assistant Joselyn Tragua Serenio, and Samchan Foreign Exchange Corp. WHAT IS STILL OPEN Whether the Sandiganbayan orders him physically moved to Payatas, or allows him to stay in hospital detention, had not been resolved as of 11 September 2026.
