The Philippines and China are still colliding at sea — and about to drill together anyway. President Marcos says talks on joint oil and gas exploration with China have, quote, moved forward, even as their ships keep clashing over rival claims in the South China Sea. Marcos declared an energy emergency in March, and fuel prices — pushed by the Middle East war — have driven inflation to some of the worst levels in years. Manila cut off these same talks in twenty twenty-two under the previous president, only for Marcos to reopen it in twenty twenty-three after meeting Xi Jinping. He says a deal is, quote, certainly possible before he leaves office in twenty twenty-eight. Can two countries share a resource while still contesting who owns it?
