Philippines Blocks China From $4 Billion Mega Bridge Over Security Fears

The Philippines’ massive Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge is supposed to transform travel across Manila Bay—but the project has also become part of a much bigger geopolitical struggle involving China, national security and the South China Sea. The roughly 32-kilometer bridge will connect Bataan and Cavite and is designed to dramatically reduce travel time between the two provinces. The project is being financed with support from the Asian Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. But controversy intensified when Chinese construction firms, including China Harbour Engineering Company, joined the bidding process. Eight firms participated in the bidding for Contract Package 1 in September 2025, according to the Philippine Department of Public Works and Highways.
