Project Description The Green Initiative: A Forest Rebirth was conceptualized as a response to the increasing environmental challenges affecting forest ecosystems in the Philippines. Deforestation, habitat destruction, and the intensifying impacts of climate change have led to the degradation of large areas of forest land, threatening biodiversity and the livelihood of communities that depend on these ecosystems. Recognizing the urgency of restoring these landscapes, the Rotary Club of Luntiang Maynila Prime designed a comprehensive program that combines large-scale tree planting with agroforestry systems. This integrated approach ensures that restored forests not only provide ecological benefits but also generate economic opportunities for local communities.The project operates in three strategic locations in Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan, each serving a distinct role in the initiative’s implementation. Camp Durumugan serves as the central coordination hub of the project and the future site of the Rotary Forest Park. It is where the majority of tree planting activities, volunteer events, environmental programs, and educational activities are conducted. This location also serves as the primary gathering point for Rotarians, volunteers, and environmental advocates who participate in the initiative. Impact and Results Since its inception, the Green Initiative has already generated significant environmental and community benefits. More than 15,000 trees have been planted, including fruit bearing species such as coconut, calamansi, mango, rambutan, and papaya. These species were carefully selected not only for their environmental value but also for their potential to provide food and livelihood opportunities for the surrounding communities.Three active reforestation sites have been established in DRT, Bulacan, creating a growing forest landscape that contributes to climate change mitigation and ecological restoration. Environmental Benefits One of the most important contributions of the project is carbon sequestration. As trees grow and mature, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping reduce greenhouse gas concentrations and mitigate climate change.The increase in forest cover also leads to improved air quality, as trees naturally filter pollutants and release oxygen, creating healthier environments for nearby communities.Reforestation efforts also contribute to soil stabilization and watershed protection. Tree roots prevent soil erosion, improve soil fertility, and help regulate water flow, protecting vital water sources that support local agriculture and daily living. Additionally, the reintroduction of native and fruit-bearing trees helps restore biodiversity, providing habitats for wildlife and promoting ecological balance within the forest ecosystem. Community Engagement and Ownership One of the most remarkable strengths of the Green Initiative is the active involvement of the Dumagat Indigenous Community, who serve as essential partners in the project’s success. Rather than being mere beneficiaries, the Dumagat community participates in every stage of the initiative. Their involvement includes site preparation, tree planting, nursery management, seedling care, and long-term monitoring of planted trees. Through this partnership, the community assumes a vital role as forest stewards, ensuring that the restored landscapes are protected and nurtured overtime. The project also integrates livelihood development programs that enable environmental conservation to go hand in hand with economic empowerment. These initiatives include chicken crossbreeding projects, which support food security and provide additional sources of income for families. The cultivation of fruit-bearing trees such as coconut, mango, calamansi, rambutan, and papaya creates sustainable agricultural opportunities within the agroforestry system. The program also encourages agroforestry practices, combining bamboo, vegetables, and root crops to create a balanced and productive land-use system that benefits both the environment and the community. Through this collaborative approach, the project fosters a strong sense of community ownership, ensuring that the restored forests will continue to thrive for generations.
