The moment Alex Eala stepped off the plane in Manila, the Philippines stopped. Thousands of fans flooded the airport, waving flags, chanting her name, and turning her homecoming into a national celebration . But it was what happened at Malacañang Palace that truly stunned the world.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. rolled out the red carpet—not just as a ceremonial gesture, but as a fanboy. "I'm a fan, so I'm gushing," he admitted . The reception, titled "Tagumpay Nating Lahat" (Our Victory), was a celebration of everything Eala had accomplished at Wimbledon and beyond .
Eala had just become the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament, stunning defending champion Iga Swiatek on Centre Court . She had beaten top-10 opponents Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina along the way. And her fairytale run had captured the hearts of an entire nation.
The President presented Eala with a Presidential Citation recognizing her "historic achievements as the first Filipino woman to attain unprecedented success on the international professional tennis circuit" . And Eala, visibly moved, responded with words that left even the palace guards speechless.
"I feel very seen," Eala said. "All the hours that aren't on TV are seen and validated and appreciated" .
She vowed to continue representing the Philippines with pride: "Lubos kong ipinagmamalaki ang pagiging Pilipino. I carry the flag with me wherever I go" .
Eala's homecoming is just the beginning. She will be returning to the Philippines on December 8 for "Alex Eala Live: Game. Set. Celebrate" at the Philippine Arena, where she will face Indonesia's Janice Tjen in what could become the most attended tennis match in history, with organizers targeting more than 52,000 spectators to surpass the record set by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's 2020 exhibition in Cape Town .
The Eala Effect is real. It's powerful. And it's just getting started.
