The United States has imposed sanctions against International Criminal Court, or ICC, President Tomoko Akane of Japan and another senior official. The sanctions are part of a U.S. campaign against the ICC that it accuses of being “politicized.” The measures bar the two ICC officials from entering the United States and from carrying out transactions in the U.S. financial system. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the two officials are engaged in efforts to investigate, arrest, or prosecute officials from countries that are not under ICC jurisdiction. In reaction, the ICC said the U.S. sanctions “undermine the rule of law.”
